If you can find the right SEO company to work with, then SEO absolutely can be a very positive experience for your business.
But, if you work with one of the bad apples, then you could be draining a large budget in a short amount of time.
Working with an SEO company can be a great way to boost your company’s revenue, but you need to make sure that you are picking the right SEO company.
For that reason, today will be looking at what to look for when hiring an SEO company.
The first thing you need to do is make sure that the SEO company that you are potentially hiring has had success with previous websites and businesses.
Preferably, other businesses that are in the same industry as you.
If you are going to be working with a local SEO company, they may not have previous experience in your industry, since then they may be not violating a non-compete contract.
But, if you are working with somebody across the country, or even across the world, it would be nice if they have had previous experience in your industry.
Either way, they should have a page on their website that clearly displays their level of competence, and utilizes cold hard data to show how they grow other people’s businesses.

You shouldn’t expect the SEO company to make their clients public, but you should be able to see the data behind their work.
Sets Realistic Expectations
You need to find an SEO company that sets realistic expectations.
If you are in a competitive market, and especially in larger cities, the fact of the matter is that you will not be in position number one in just a couple of weeks.
Performing good SEO on a website is a process, and needs to be done over the course of many months to see great results.
If somebody is approaching you, trying to sell you SEO, and is trying to sell you a dream that your life will be changed in only a few weeks, this person can’t be trusted.
If they are lying about that, who knows what else they may be lying to you about. There are a lot of people out there who just want your money and don’t care about how much they really help your company.
For that reason, you need to find somebody that really seems to care about you and your business, and has given you reasonable expectations.
Picking an SEO company is not a slow task.
You will likely be in contact with prospects for days, weeks, or even months, before deciding to work with someone.
So, one of your deciding factors should be how well they communicate with you.
If you can’t even get ahold of them when they’re trying to get you to sign up, imagine how they could potentially treat you when you have already signed up.
Just make sure that you have the contact information of somebody within the company that you can easily get a response from in case anything goes sideways, or you have any questions.
You don’t ever want to find yourself in a situation where you have a crazy bill that makes no sense, and nobody that can explain it to you.
It should almost never take more than one day to get back to one of your clients if you run a successful SEO company.
Another thing to keep in mind, when thinking about communication, is what they are actually doing for you.
There are a lot of different techniques and tactics that go into SEO work, and if they cannot effectively communicate what exactly they are doing for you, then they are likely not a great SEO company.
Some things to ask about are;
“How will you help me with backlinking?”
“What role will content play in my SEO strategy?”
“What does a successful partnership look like between us, in terms of my business’ success?”
These are a good start, and should not be too difficult to get a good answer out of.
If the “SEO expert” that you are talking to is having trouble with these questions, that may be a sign that he’s not quite the expert that he is trying to come off as.
This is one that I’m sure I don’t need to tell you, but I will anyways.
One thing to keep in mind with pricing is that it can of course be too high, but it can also be too low.
If somebody comes to you and says that they will rank you number one in just a few months, and only wants a few hundred dollars a month, you need to run.
SEO is not an instant process and is not something where a few hundred dollars a month budget will be able to dominate a competitive market.
Most often, SEO budgets should be in the ballpark of $1,000 to $2,000 per month, for most small businesses.
For larger businesses, this figure could stretch up to $10,000 per month, or even more.
Although somebody trying to charge you less than the appropriate amount is better than trying to way overcharge you, neither are beneficial to you.
You need to find somebody who seems very trustworthy and has an appropriate price point.
